Driftwood, scrap metal and other discarded objects are the essential ingredients of Peter Gilbert’s work. Shaping these materials into whimsical, often humorous designs, he creates a diversity of sculptures, ranging from stylised creatures to funky furniture and conceptual works. All share a common thread: to promote both upcycling and greater environmental or social awareness.
As an Anglo Dane born in Lisbon, Portugal, he studied in the UK where he gained his BA Honours in Graphic Design at Norwich School of Art and Masters in International Journalism at City University. He has exhibited in the UK, Denmark and Portugal including several participations in Estoril ArteMar international exhibit to promote sustainable Oceans. Currently he lives in Sintra, dividing his time between sculpture and copywriting. He showcases his works through interior design outlets such as “Rice” and “Coisas da Terra”.
In recent years, Peter has become concerned with a rapidly changing world and its effects on our society, namely with the evolution of AI, the Pandemic and other global dilemmas. In response, he has created a body of works to highlight these contemporary issues with a satirical yet cautionary humour. His artistic creations are often inspired by famous children’s fables and classic fictional characters reimagined for a contemporary context
